They felt that the Christianity they followed was leading them into slavery. Now, with the raids from 1622 to 1628 the Jesuits were down to only tow reductions. The two reductions that were left were among the first one created. The two reductions were Loreta and San Ignacio. The move south only left twelve thousand people alive. But, the retreat did not deter the Paulistas, who continued to raid and carry off slaves until the reductions far to the south faced extinction. .
The Jesuits traveled into the Rio Grande de Sol region, there they began to set up reductions. They first one the set up in that region was San Miguel in 1632. Indians flooded into this reduction along with Jesus Maria. The ran to get away from for certain slavery. The Jesuits were always concerned about further banderiante raids and their fears were well placed. They were also concerned about the new threat of the Caaugas. Soon this lead to a war between the reduction Indians and the Caaugas. The reduction Indians were the victors ,but the threat of the banderiantes still remained. With the defeat of the Caaguas the Mamelucos raided and destroyed Jesus Maria. Again, the Jesuits and their Indians had to retreat.
The remaining reductions traveled to the other side of the river. The two reductions forged a defense and again were left without the help of the government. .
King Phillip IV knew of the actions of the banderiantes and approved several ordinances for the reductions. In 1640 the viceroy of Peru approved the right for the Indians to bare firearms. While this was a much need measure the Mamelucos in 1638 continued to push into Parna. Their Jesuits knew their lives where in dire straits and so they began to train an army. They started too build their army in the early part of the 1640's. They trained their army to use what is not today as guerilla tactics and they started to construct arms facilities.
