             Cromwell- risen to command the round head army. He beheaded Charles I and rejected all the Presbyterians from Parliament by force of arms. He processed power and became exasperated by the attempts of the legislators to perpetrate themselves to office and to profit by confiscating the wealth of their opponents.
             Glorious Revolution- reflected anti-absolutists theories that had taken shape in the late 17th century. The bill of rights, act of toleration and act of succession was passed. For the English it occurred w/out bloodshed and for the defenders of Parliamentary prerogative. After 1688 no king attempted to govern w/out parliament. Parliament strengthened the control over the collection and expenditure of public funds. Future monarchs were unable to conduct a country's business w/out seeking from the house of commons. Advocates of the civil liberties now guaranteed w/in the bill of rights and for defenders of the Protestant cause. The revolution consolidated the position of large property holders, magnates whose local power base had been threatened by the intervention of Charles and James the 2nd. It brought misery to the Roman Catholic minority in Scotland that had joined w/England and Whales in the union of Great Britain in 1701 and to the catholic majority in Ireland.
             Peter the Great- (1689-1725) returned to Russia determined to remodel his countries institutions along the western lines. He had scandalized nobility and clergy by traveling to Holland and England o recruit highly skilled workers and to study the craft of shipbuilding. He financed his army by increasing taxes and fostered growth of iron and munition industries. He replaced the Duma w/ a rubber stamp senate and appointed a procurator to manage the affairs of the Russian Orthodox church. He went to war w/ Sweden Charles XII who devoted most of his reign to campaigns in the field against the Danes, Poles, and Russian. He moved the Russian capital from Moscow to the Gulf of Finland.
