The basic error of Jewish and Muslim fundamentalism is somewhat the converse - the use of the mystical to map out a practical plan of action. Best example is the use of religion to establish a state, a means of governance. Remember that Jesus steadfastly resisted the attempt to use his faith and spirituality to rule the world - render unto Caesar what is Caesar's.
             Perhaps most importantly, fundamentalist movements arise during times of rapid change. Fundamentalists are afraid and anxious, to the point of paranoia. They see their way of life slipping away and react by reverting to beliefs from an earlier time. Beliefs that are easier to understand and hold fast to. We see these tendencies in ourselves when we become nostalgic. What is nostalgia about, if it is not about retreating into an earlier time when we were safe, a time that we lived through to get where we are today, a time which offered its own set of trials and tribulations, but which we know that we were able to survive? .
             The change which has prompted a fundamentalist reaction in the twentieth century is industrialization, a change that is fundamentally western. When we speak of industrialized nations, we think of the US, Britain, Germany, France, Russia, Japan. We do not think of Iran, Afghanistan, Saudi Arabia, or Egypt. The conflict arises from a modern tendency to believe that logos is all we need, that mythos cannot be a part of any pragmatic policy.
             Fundamentalists of all faiths reject most of what we consider to be enlightened, Western beliefs: democracy, pluralism, religious tolerance, peacekeeping, free speech, and separation of church and state.
             Until the 1970's, it was assumed that religion had taken a back seat in world affairs, and that secularism had irrevocably taken the place of religion in world governance. Of course, until the Renaissance, various religious empires had controlled the world - e.
