Prohibition

In the bottom right hand corner you see a caption of what you assume is the man at the bar's family. It shows a woman and a child sitting at a table, an empty table with no food on it. The woman has her head in her hands across the table in despair, with the child next to her holding up an empty bowl. This is showing that the mans drinking is affecting his family in a bad way, they are poor and therefore have no money for food (the husband is spending all his money on alcohol). At the top of the poster it is titled "The Poor Man's Club", this title shows a sense of irony and that all of its members and their families stay poor. At the bottom of the poster it says "A Club Member in Good Standing PAYING HIS DUES". This implies that he is a regular who spends all his wages in their every week. Lastly, beneath the poster is a slogan stating "SLAVES OF THE SALOON" which gives the conclusion that people were totally dominated by the saloon.
The Poster in source D is titled "Daddy's in there .", and below is a picture of two children outside of a saloon where their Daddy is. It shows that the young girl is left to look after the smaller child because their Daddy is too busy drinking in the saloon. This is seen to be the result of drinking. Underneath the poster there is a quote "And our Shoes and Stockings and Food are in the Saloon too, and they"ll never come out". This is telling us that the money their Dad should be spending on the things the children need is being spent on alcohol in the saloon, therefore they will never get shoes or stockings and food. This poster is rather simple but is an emotional message.
It is obvious that both sources are for Prohibition. Both posters are very effective but from different angles and also I know that movements such as the WCTU (Women's Christian Temperance Union) would march in and try to close down the saloons themselves. The two pictures look completely different but two artists still manage to get the same point across, that alcohol is leaving men and their families poor.
