Medicine in the Ancient World


The physicians were put through many years of hard training at temple schools where they would study the arts of interrogation, inspection, and palpation. There were many different jobs the physician could hold, some of them included the Overseer of physicians, Chief physician, Eldest physician, Inspector of physicians, and finally Overseer of physicians of Upper and Lower Egypt. The doctors knew a lot about the human body for their time, they were able to study the structure of the brain, cure many illnesses, and set broken bones. People believe that their strong knowledge of anatomy and physiology is due to their practices of embalming of the dead, which was a ritual for the Egyptians since prehistoric times. Their knowledge of the workings of the human body encompassed new areas of medicine ranging from a basic understanding of anatomy to the introduction of some surgical skills. Some of the other discoveries, treatments and teachings are still used today by numerous medical professionals. .
             One of the earliest doctors that emerged from Ancient Egypt was Imhotep who was not only a great doctor but also an astronomer, architect and builder of the Stepped Pyramid at Saqqara. Imhotep lived around 2600 BC and was vizier, chief advisor to King Zozer. After the kings death his temple was used as a place of worship and healing. Imhotep came to be regarded as a god to the Egyptians and magnificent temples were built in his honor and a number of statues have been found sitting upright .

             Much of what we know of the Egyptian medicine and the work of many physicians comes from a variety of medical documents, known as "papyrus". Some of the most common documents include the "Kahun Gynecology Papyrus", the "Edwin Smith Papyrus" and the "Ebers Papyrus".
