Yellow Raft

A relationship developed between Clara and Lecon and Clara became pregnant. Once Clara became pregnant with Lecon's child, the family fell apart and the family lost respect for both Lecon and Clara. To avoid a scandal it was decided that that Ida would become the alleged mother. During Clara's pregnancy both girls were sent away to a convent to have the child. Ida was treated with little respect and had to earn her keep at the convent by cleaning while Clara was doted on. Once the child was born, Ida returned with Christine, but Clara did not. This upset Ida's father very much and he started working even more so he could be away from home and became dependant on alcohol. He became a very angry man and got into many fights. Many years later both her mother and father passed away. .
Ida, at 15 years old, seemed as if she was developmentally at the proper place with regard to Erikson's eight psychosocial stages of development. Trust versus mistrust is the first stage, while ranges from birth to 1 years old. In order to gain trust, an infant must received the proper nurturing, attention, food, feelings of safety, and everything else that would fulfill their needs (Sroufe, Cooper & DeHart, 1992). Although, all that is mentioned in the story was that Ida was very nave, she seemed to be a very trusting girl and became very attached to Clara right away. She seemed to have confidence in her family and Clara that they would do what was best for her and look out for her.
The second stage is called autonomy versus shame and doubt, which occurs during the ages 1 to 3 years old. This stage is where a child learns "to be self-sufficient by mastering tasks such as feeding and dressing themselves, and they begin to separate from their parents. They also learn to conform to social rules. Children who do not develop autonomy may doubt their abilities and their capacity to act on the world and develop feelings of shame (Sroufe, Cooper, & Dehart, 1992).
