The manifest functions reflect what we purposely created the school system to do. First, schools were intended to transmit culture from one generation to the next, Second is the way they were created to screen and select those who were capable of doing the work from those who were not. Third is they were to integrate students into a common culture and encourage the development of a relatively homogeneous society with shared value. Fourth is they were shouldered with the responsibility to teach a variety of acts and skills. And fifth, schools were expected to actively engage in a process of innovation. They were not supposed to transmit existing knowledge, but rather were expected to add to the cultural heritage by developing new knowledge and skills as well. The schools also serve latent functions. Latent functions are the unintended consequences of the school system that, while not purposeful, have turned out to be beneficial for society. The first latent function of the school is that it serves as a "baby sitting" agency. Second, the school serves as a "marriage marketplace." Third is the schools permit distinctive subcultures to form, like honor societies, and voluntary groups, many of which can be beneficial for the society. And fourth, schools can also serve the function of keeping adolescents out of trouble. The logic is that with a good education, the person will have a great job and a great job will result in a great income, which will determine the quality of life he or she will come to enjoy. Education can be looked at from two broad perspectives. They are Socratic view, which states that education must draw out the best in the person and help him or her build character. The sophists meanwhile are more utilitarian in their outlook. They believe that the primary purpose of education is to provide the students with the knowledge and skills for employment in the city-state.
