Women in Management and Leadership Roles

             Introduction.
             In the 1990's, gender differences in leadership styles were common and accepted. There was a focus on the style women had and were believed to exhibit more transformational leadership style that were more effective than male leaders. Research and theories on leadership in earlier times excluded women and strongly expressed how women were not a good fit in leadership positions. Recent studies prove completely the opposite. The transformational qualities that women exhibit are required and part of organizational structures today. Due to all these changes on how women are being viewed in management positions, the future is looking brighter for increased opportunities. Have previous theories affected women and continue to affect in raising the profile of women in management? It's impossible to respect value and admire great leadership if you can't identify what makes a leader great.  Because of this, the identity crisis exists in today's workplace is something that women leaders in particular have been facing for too long. While the tide is changing and more women are being elevated into leadership roles, there is still much work to accomplish. Women are opportunity driven and passionate about what they do and how they do it. Why are there still few women in leadership? .
             Body.
             The word leadership was used in the 1800's in writings about political issues and control. In those times leadership was not about skills and style, but about inheritance, usurpation and appointment. We are in a different age now but some things have not changed, and that is how we have chosen our leaders. Leaders are chosen in a process that takes place in groups in which one member influences and controls the behavior of others towards some common goal. In 1938 Lewin and Lippitt introduced the concept relating to leadership styles. This early leadership research may have changed perceptions about the suitability of women in management as they can be attributed to both women and men.
