An Analysis of Asterix in Britain


The main secondary sources that are used a number of articles written by Anthea Bell, one of the two translators, which review her translations of the Asterix series and also give information on the processes by which they were written. These were pulled from an article written my Michaela Canepari focusing on the translation of Asterix in Britain into English and Italian.
             As for the Chapter which focuses on the theory of translation, it will be the most heavily sourced chapter as it contains a history of translation. Secondary sources will be used and we will be looking at various translation theories developed by theorists such as Peter Newmark, Susan Bassnett and more particularly Lawrence Venuti because he has developed the theories of domestication and foreignisation which we will be focusing on. The aim of this project is to be able to highlight the translation theories used by the translators of the Asterix series. It aims to see where the translation of Asterix in Britain can be situated in terms of contemporary translation theory. The results of this analysis will be outlined in the overall conclusion. .
             Chapter 2: An Introduction to Asterix.
             2.1 Introduction.
             In this chapter we will look at the "Asterix" series and examine how "Asterix in Britain" is a relevant edition to analyse as there a lot of examples that make it pertinent to examine from an academic perspective. To do so we must observe the origins of the series, its most important characters and the plot. It will be necessary to analyse the elements of the plot that we deem suitable and finally we will discuss the translators who were picked to take on this challenge.
             2.2 The Origins of Asterix.
             The origins of the Asterix series can be traced back to 1959, when the first issue of this bande dessinée appeared in the pages of a French magazine called "Pilote". The authors René Goscinny and Albert Uderzo were enlisted to create a new comic book for the new magazine.
