The third chapter will aim to analyse and give a detailed overview of existing translation theory from its beginnings to the contemporary theory that is in use today with a particular focus on the theories of foreignisation and domestication. These are part of Venuti's theory of the translator's invisibility. In chapter 4 we will analyse the translation into English of Asterix in Britain with a particular look at aspects such as names, puns and language used with reference to translation theory that will have been examined in the previous chapter.
1.3 Academic relevance of Research.
Although there are a substantial amount of books already available devoted to the topic of translation theory, there has not been much work done on translation when it comes to the topic of comic books. One can theorise that comic books may not be a main stream genre for researchers because of the fact that they have a different audience to that of other areas of literature. .
Academic research on the topic of translation has concentrated on the ways in which a translator should translate a work that is purely text based. This research is relevant to the field of study because comic books need to be approached in a different manner. Comics are a form of literature that is based on the relationship between pictures and writing, the translator needs to take into account the picture, the text and even the speech bubble. When these factors are taken into account it means that the text will need to be contextualised in a different way. Therefore it is relevant to examine this kind of literature to see if the theory that can be applied to more "classic literature" can be applied to comic books.
1.3 Literature Review.
This research is compiled of both primary and secondary sources. The primary sources include the original "Asterix Chez Les Bretons" in French and the translated version "Asterix in Britain", which are the books that will be used to pull the necessary examples needed to be analysed, and "The Complete Guide to Asterix" by Peter Kessler which contained valuable information on the origins of the series and also excerpts from the translators themselves.
