Research Question.
Initially upon embarking on my self-study my research question was, "Will I be able to reduce my anxiety through setting strict personal deadlines, using positive affirmations, and practicing self-care?" This is the research question I worked with for the first five weeks; however, during week five, I refined my research question and methodology to, "Can I reduce my overall anxiety and stress level through the following: .
1. Engage in time management and planning to balance the duties and deadlines for my full-time job, my course work, and my personal life. .
2. Goal setting: Setting goals and deadlines in advance to prevent procrastination and/or falling behind by allowing myself a 'buffer time' to get posts and assignments due before the course due-date. .
3. Engage in self-care through a creative outlet such as: scrapbooking/ crafting/ decorating my planner?" In refining my self-study I was able to more clearly and specifically outline (and define) the three aspects of my self-study, which had previously been more difficult to track due to the generalized nature of the initial research question. Throughout academic literature regarding anxiety, experts have proven that there are numerous ways that one can reduce their overall stress and anxiety. In my self-study, I chose to focus on three things which I believed would reduce my anxiety as a result of addressing the issues which my anxiety appeared to stem from. .
Decreasing Anxiety - Review of Literature.
It has been well documented that individuals who are perfectionists often experience increased stress and anxiety in relation to participation in academia, which can be a contributing factor to anxiety-based procrastination (Flett, Hewitt, Blankstein, & Gray, 1998). Flett et al. state that because perfectionists (often) have unattainable standards of perfection for themselves, this can cause increased levels of psychological distress including, "elevated symptoms of depression and anxiety" (Flett, Hewitt, Blankstein, & Gray, 1998, pp 1364).
