This is an extremely common issue in the military environment where rank equals power, and that power is often grossly misused and abused. The manner in which we understand, and use power can be a significant determinant of the frequency and types of conflict that could potentially arise. The manner in which we define and use power that was given to us due to our rank within an organization can also affect the effectiveness of our conflict management skills. When the power is misused to affect other individual's behavior for personal gains conflict can and will emerge. .
mThe fourth element of conflict is the individual's values and beliefs. This is an extremely hard element to manage because values and beliefs are ingrained in us and are extremely difficult and slow to change. We are all affected in some way or another, consciously and unconsciously by our values. This set of traditional beliefs or principles determines in large part how we behave, and are extremely important to our overall wellbeing. When difference in values exist, or when specific values are incompatible or unclear conflict is inevitable. In a criminal justice system the evidence of differing values is overwhelming. For example, in judiciary component of criminal justice system the values of individual judges often leads to conflict prime example of this would be the issue of abortion. .
The final element of conflict is individual's feelings and emotions. How often have we witnessed someone make decisions or judgments based on their personal feelings and emotions that they experienced at the time of decision making? This happens a lot and it can lead to conflict. "Conflict triggers strong emotions and can lead to hurt feelings, disappointment, and discomfort" ("Conflict", 2015). Furthermore, "when handled in an unhealthy manner, it can cause irreparable rifts, resentments, and break-ups" ("Conflict", 2015).
