Hitler and Germany's Totalitarian State

This movement was created to form the German youth to the Nazi ideology by planning activities, weekend trips, walking and sports. The boys and girls who were part of it could have access to many leisure pursuits, but always in the Nazi's spirit, wearing the uniform and giving the Nazi salute. This technique of indoctrination was really efficient, as young germans were attracted by the entertaining aspect of the Hitler Youth, making the movement a success: by 1939, 7,2 millions out of 8"millions germans aged between 10 and 18 years old were part of the Hitler Youth. The indoctrination by the control of education and youth is well shown by document 1, which is an extract from a letter written by Dr. Robert Ley, Chief of the Labour Front. Indeed, it states that the Nazi government "begin[s] with the child when he is three years old" and that "As soon as he begins to think, he is made to carry a little flag" which really shows the control on the germans' life "from the cradle to the grave" that is made by the Nazi Party. In addition, this document is of value because it is a letter and although we are not sure of this, if it was for private and not public consumption the value is that it is very honest. Also, it is of value because it was written by Dr Robert Ley, the man in charge of the Labour Front who lived at the time and was privy to official doctrine. Therefore, the document is describing the contemporary atmosphere and explaining the Nazis motives with education. However, the document presents limitations as it's only an extract from a letter, so we can't know what comes before and after. Also, we're don't really know why and to whom this letter was written, so we can't rally know the motivations of Robert Ley here. Another limitation is that as the letter was written at the time, there is no hindsight in the document, limiting its value. Moreover, the document only states "man" but does not talk about women, which were also targeted by the Nazi Party's ideology.
