Technology and Cyberbullying

Outing is the public display or forwarding of personal communications such as text messages, emails, instant messaging. Many bullies print out instant messaging conversations, often containing personal or sexual information, and show them around to other people. Even reading out the saved messages on a person's mobile phone is a form of outing. Masquerading is an elaborate form of cyberbullying where they bully pretends to be someone who they aren't. For example, the bully might create a fake email addresses, instant messaging names, or they might use someone else's mobile phone to bully someone. This would make it appear as if the threats have been sent by someone else, again keeping the bully's identity hidden.
Cyberbullying also drastically affects the victims. Cyberbullying can cause significant emotional harm. "Signs of cyberbullying vary, but may include: being emotionally upset during or after using the internet or the phone, being very secretive or protective of one's digital life, withdrawal from family members, friends, and activities, avoiding school or group gatherings, slipping grades and "acting out" in anger at home, changes in mood, behavior, sleep, or appetite, wanting to stop using the computer or cellphone, being nervous or jumpy when getting an instant message, text, or email, and avoiding discussions about computer activities"( Hirsch par 3). These symptoms are the most common to happen for the victims who were cyberbullied. Victims reasons for being like this is because he or she feels that their life is falling apart around them. In some matters, many teenagers can experience a great deal of emotional difficulty ranging from violent behaviors, drugs, poor grades, auto accidents, and relationship problems when they are starting to have the symptoms. The victims cannot escape and act like the way they are because when they go to school, they are face-to-face with their bullies and when they are at home or away from school, they are worrying that their bullies will taunt them through text messages, social media, or email.
