Technology and Cyberbullying

The CRC survey also found that another 20 percent were the ones bullying others online and 11 percent of them doing it more than once on different forms of cyber bullying" Cyberstatistics par 7). These numbers may not sound like a lot on a scale this size, but when you take 20 percent of the roughly 22 million teens that live in the United States, you are looking at 4.4 million teens being cyber bullied at least once in their lifetime if not more. The numbers that Cyberstatistics mentioned is outrageously high and in order to bring it down, we must tell these kids that spreading rumors and saying hurtful things online, or by any means of technology, is not okay just because you think you might be getting away with it. As the old saying goes, "If you have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all." .
As technology grows so do the ways people abuse others with the use of technology. People are getting more creative and smarter on how to cyber bully someone. According to the article "Types of Cyber Bullying," there are different ways people find to bully someone online but there are five most common ways people use to attack their victims. The five ways are anonymity, flaming, exclusion, outing, and masquerading. Anonymity is when someone makes threatening comments to someone, but is able to hide who they are. This means that it can be hard for that person to figure out who sent them a threatening message or email. Flaming is an intense argument, that normally takes place in chat rooms or instant messages or email. Exclusion happens if teenagers who don't have mobile phones are excluded from the group of teenagers do. Girls are more likely to exclude others while boys tend to threaten with physical violence. For example, a girl is having sleepover and invites all the girls in class except for the one girl who they don't like. Later that night, the girls at the sleepover goes on internet and taunt the one who had been left out.
