A Summary of the American

The most notorious killings were on St. Valentines Day 1929, when Capone's men gunned down six members of Bugs Moran gang and an innocent bystander in a Chicago garage. It was such a violent act that Capone lost any respect that he had managed to keep over the 9 years. .
Shortly after this event, Capone's light was dimmed: the federal government finally was able to pin him to a crime. He was sent to prison, for income-tax invasion. These events, along with the 500 plus "gangland" killings that took place over the decade fractured America's respect of the law, and in turn respect of their government. Prohibition was a highly organised, highly sophisticated professionally managed business (maybe more so than the government). The Mafia bosses controlled the how, where, and who: just like Ford reshaped automobiles and technology, gangland America 'reformed' society. .
             The American Way of Life.
Only one third of American homes had access to electricity in 1919. Electricity opened up and brightened everyone's world. The light bulb was a miracle. Electricity made it possible for the radio to become a home treasure. A new form of entertainment had emerged. Storytelling took on a new meaning. The news of the day became important - every home wanted a radio. Singers such as Rudy Vallee and Jessica Dragonette were the new icons. People were amazed that they could now hear the voice of their own President in their very own living room!.
Technology, communications and media vitalised the emerging corporate America. In 1924 the Trans-Atlantic telephone service was established. The first connection was between New York and London. This service opened up a whole new world of media possibilities.
The entertainment of "gossip" was fuelled by the media, and Americans could watch listen or read about other people's lives. The decade featured a string of high-profile criminal trials that fascinated the nation.
