Sexual Assault And Sport

My purpose is to see if male athletes are more prone to commit sexual assaults crimes and if they are than what factors contained by athletic environments promote, support, and close the eyes to this violent behavior. Some of the questions I would like to know are athletes more likely than nonathletes to engage in physically aggressive acts in everyday life outside sport. I would also like to know why athletes commit the acts and if the consequences are less then they would be for a nonathlete. I wanted to see if we just thinks athletes are commiting all this crimes since athletes are given mass media tendency to magnifying their crimes because sensationalism sells newspapers and magazines and improves television ratings. I wanted to see if the athlete are more prone to commit these violent crimes then what sports are among the most commonly accused. .

Sexual assault on college campauses has received increasing public attention especially involving athletes. Several serrveys have found that a disproportionate number of admitted asquaintance rapes on campus were commited by male athletes. Male athletes sexual abuse possibly may, in fact, be part of a larger pattern of behavior with roots firmly planted in the very structure and culture of sport. The members of football, lacrosse, hockey. And basketball teams have been among those college men most likely to be accused of participation in gang rape(Bohmer&Parrot,1993). Most of the research indicated the sports that are the most physical are more likely to commit gang rape. Also what was supprising to find out was a lot of times the most popualar player on the team and a member of one of the top schools. Psychologist Chris O'Sullivan, Ph.D., of Buckness University in Lewisburg, Pennsylvania, studied 26 alleged gang rapes that were documented between 1980 and 1990, and found that fraternity groups committed the highest number, followed by athletic teams.
