Sexual Assault And Sport

In addition, she found that "the athletes who do this are usually on a star team, not just any old team. It was the football team at Oklahoma, the basketball team at Minnesota, the lacrosse team at St. John's. It seems to be our most privileged athletes - the ones, by the way, most sought after by women - who are often involved in gang rape. This could be because these schools get more press then the smaller schools and that the women that were being taken advantage are more likely to come out hoping for some money if that athlete goes pro. .
The players that play the sport are trained to be physical and expected to be tough and intimdateing. Criminal justice professor Michael Clay Smith of the University of Southern Mississippi argued that athletes are more involved in violent behavior than are their peers because thay are physical people who are expected by others to be physically aggressive(Lederman,1990). The elements of aggression, pain, and injury in sport suggest the need for athletes to be "tough" to succeed or endure in athletic competition (Nixon, 1993). That is, we would expect athletes who learn to express tough attitudes and engage in aggressive or violent behavior as part of their sports role to be more physically aggressive or violent outside of sport. In many was, an athletic team functions as a "maculine proving ground" for adolescent as well as adults males (Messner,1990).Players that are consider tough are not supposed to be afraid of anything and this form a lot of the research is another reason why physical sports may be at a greater risk of commenting a sexual assult. .
Other reason of why this happens is the male bonding between the athletes. Mary Kose did pioneering work on sexual assault on campus in the 1980s. She concentrated on male bonding occurring on sports teams(Curry, 1991). Where the main focus was on was in the locker room. The main topics in the locker were was sex and aggression.
