Aesthetic expression has been present throughout history. Prime examples of ancient aesthetic expression are the pyramids. A pyramid is a monumental structure constructed of or faced with brick. It has a rectangular base and four sloping triangular side that meet at an apex or truncated to form a platform. Pyramids have been built at various times throughout the world. You are able to find these beautiful structures in Egypt, Mexico, Central and South America, Cyprus, Greece, Western Asia, Ethiopia, Italy, India, Thailand and some Islands of the Pacific Ocean. However, the pyramids of Central and South America and Egypt are the most commonly known. .
The sides of the Great Pyramid rise at an angle of 5152? and are accurately oriented to the four cardinal points of the compass. The core is formed of yellowish limestone blocks. They are almost completely gone now, the outer casing along with the inner passages are of finer light-colored limestone. The interior burial chamber is built of huge blocks of granite. Approximately 2.3 million blocks of stone were cut, transported, and assembled to create the 5,750,000-ton structure, which is a masterpiece of technical skill and engineering ability. The internal walls as well as those few outer-casing stones that still remain in place show finer joints than any other masonry constructed in ancient Egypt. .
The entrance to the Great Pyramid is on the north side with the opening being 59 feet above ground level. A sloping corridor descends from it through the pyramid's interior masonry in which it penetrates the rocky soil on which the structure rests. The end of the corridor is in an unfinished underground chamber. The underground chamber branches to an ascending passageway that leads to a room known as the Queen's Chamber and to a great slanting gallery that is 151 feet long. At the upper end of this gallery a long and narrow passage gives access to the burial room proper, usually termed the King's Chamber.
