Green Party, participation in Government Dilemmas

 


             How do the radical views of such parties conform to institutionalized politics? This is the dilemma green parties" face when in a coalition. Is their bureaucratisation a horizontal transformation? Or does it ultimately force them out of government, for the reason that, they are opposed to the very principles of political institutionalization? Conventional politics in delegate systems converge on matters such as, accentuating issues that can generate public support. Secondly there is a process and involvement in bartering, deal brokering, concession and coalition building. Thirdly there is a differentiation between socio-ideological movements and pragmatic politics. "The problem facing green politics is that while there is an increasing consensus on what an ecologically sustainable society may look like, there is no common ground on how we may arrive at such a society." [3] Finally, politics of this sort are by their very nature institutionalised and bureaucratic, and as such are seen as constraining on green party objectives.
             These limitations can have a profound effect on the party's image, appeal and popularity if they are considered outside of mainstream politics, and the foremost issues are as follows; .
             I. The structure of the political system makes a major difference, green parties experience greater success in proportional representative systems. Mainstream parties sometimes include green parties in their election agendas to broaden their support.
             II. As "anti-parties" or "movement-parties" Green parties are opposed to "politics as usual" and attract an ideological core.
             III. As non-Leninist parties, they must pay attention to constituencies and their interests; vanguard cannot run roughshod over people.
             IV. Parties that offer popular or attractive platforms are likely to find those issues co-opted by mainstream parties.
             V. Parties that move towards the mainstream to attract support will alienate the ideological core that animates them.
