My Social Studies class had a student teacher for the second half of the semester. Just like everyone else in my class, we thought, great a student teacher we wont have to do anything. Our real teacher would not be in the room so these next few weeks will be a breeze. Boy was we wrong. On the first day Mr. Allen, our student teacher, gave us a homework assignment. Now, Mr. Allen seemed like a great guy, very smart, but we were not doing any homework. The next day in class he begins with, " pass up your assignment from last night." As most of the class looked around and chuckled a few people turned it in, maybe five or six. Then Mr. Allen told us how everyone else would receive a zero out of five. " Only five points, oh no!" One guy shouted from the back as the class broke out with laughter. Then Mr. Allen told us to take out a blank sheet of paper. We had a ten-question quiz worth twenty points. It turned out most of us got a zero out of twenty-five instead of a zero out of five. The ones that did the homework said the quiz was easy, all you had to do was read a little. From that point on we did our homework and only every once in a while would he give us a quiz. For the first couple of weeks I did not like Mr. Allen, but I did respect him. As time passed I could see he was just trying to do his job and after talking to him a few times we became pretty good friends. We would even shoot ball together after school. One of the problems that I had was I would always compare Mr. Allen to our regular teacher. I soon understood that people are not going to teach the same way, but many different ways can be successful. On the reverse side I have also had teachers everyone liked, but did not have any respect for. In those classes we never got anything accomplished but receiving a grade. At the time it was great, but I found out quickly that those were the classes and teachers that hurt me when I got to college.
