Overview of Communication

For example in an early years setting like a nursery, if a child talked to a teacher about another child taking the toy they were playing with and the teacher would not care it would make the child feel unwanted and like their problems aren't important which could cause low self-confidence. .
The last verbal skill I am going to explain is paraverbal skills which is the tone, pitch and pacing of the voice. It is paramount to control paraverbal skills because they show what the understanding, deducing of the other person. All of these are important to understand someone further from verbal skills. Some of the things that paraverbal communication can show is when someone is angry or excited, speech tends to become more rapid and higher pitched. When bored or feeling down, speech tends to slow and take on a monotone quality. When feeling defensive, speech is often abrupt. These cannot sometimes be controlled so it can tell the audience a lot about what they are feeling. For example if in a school a child was saying okay but their tone was defensive the teacher would know something was wrong.
The second type of communication is non-verbal. This consists of body language, gestures, and facial expressions. These non-verbal signals can give clues and additional information and meaning over and above spoken communication. The popular stereotype of Italians, involving big gestures, lots of hand-waving, and plenty of loud and excited shouting, may be a stereotype, but it exists for a reason. In the Italian culture, excitement is shown a lot more obviously than in the UK, for example, and non-verbal communication tends to be a lot more obvious. This can make it much harder for Italians to interpret non-verbal communication in the UK or USA, where it is more subtle. The thumbs-up gesture, which generally signals approval in English-speaking countries, is considered offensive in other countries, including Greece, Italy and some parts of the Middle East.
