Types of Racism

People are usually in the HUB advocating for people to join their sorority, fraternity or organization and some of those organization or groups of Greek life explicitly state they are seeking African Americans, Hispanics, or Irish students. This always irritates me because I believe that if people continue to section themselves off from others that are not of their ethnicity then they are only contributing to racist ideologies as a social symptom. My problem isn't within the fact that each of the groups mentioned consist of people primarily of one race, my issue lies within the statements made by my peers that are in those groups. Some of the people will join the organization specific to their race and gain this sense of ethnocentricity that I believe hurts society. When we start to believe in a hierarchy of races and decide to set ourselves at the top of that pyramid we are only strengthening the color lines that separate us and hinder our ability to function together in a democracy that values all people of different backgrounds. To clarify my point, I will state it's okay to have different societies that are primarily one race, as long as that society respects and values the differences of other races and are able to live in harmony with them. When we are creating our own Greek life and organizational societies of people to consist of one sole ethnicity because we wish to identify with others alike and we feel as if we are the greater group then we are contributing in neo-racism and are failing to leave the racist ideologies of our past behind.

After watching the Space Traders I realized how angry I would be if our government allowed such an action which in turn lead me to realizing why there is still so much hostility in our country regarding racism. If I got mad over a story and was disgusted by our government's fictional actions I can definitely understand how racism is still evident in today's society and why African Americans feel the need to fight the "white power".
