Howard's prediction is correct. The case encouraged African Americans to fight for their individual rights and not only to undermine the institution of slavery but to gain their individual freedom and equality as well.
New Racism.
As Collins has stated, "the past is ever present". In his text he states that wealth and poverty continued to be racialized as a result of chattel slavery, which ended over 150 years ago. The racist illness of the past has trickled down into our generation which is evident in poverty rates as well as conviction rates amongst African Americans in comparison with Caucasians for similar crimes. Collins discusses how since slavery began Black men were viewed as bucks, a human animal that is domesticated as a result of slavery (Collins, pg. 56). They were viewed by white folk as violent beast that must be tamed. Black women were viewed as sex symbols; they were believed to promote promiscuity and were forced to sexually please their owners. When I think about today's society and how African Americans are treated in the justice system I think about how huge of an impact the slave trade had. Black males are pulled over often, along with Mexicans and minorities alike, by law enforcement for simply being a person of color. In New York minorities are often the ones stopped and questioned for no reason other than the thought that they looked "suspicious". Some law officials tend to fear the African American race because they are ignorant when it comes to the logistics of crimes. They believe African American males from the ghetto are the wrong doers in this country and that is a result of the slave trade because, as mentioned earlier, the mental illness of racism has managed to trickle down over the generations. .
Neo-Racism.
When I walk around my campus, specifically when I wonder around the HUB (a common area for us college kids to eat, relax, study), it is hard for me to not notice the color line separating my peers.
