It said to be a magic-medallion which defended its bearer. Every creature respected it and its bearer as they did the Childlike Empress herself, for she was the reason of their existence. The amulet was the form of two snakes a dark and a light one they were biting each other's tails. It was on a chain, meant to put around the neck of the bearer.
Atreyu rode his horse Artax who could speak. They rode a long way when they met three tree-like creatures; every one of them had some weirdness: one of them didn't have a right side, the other didn't have legs, and the third had a large hole in his chest. They told Atreyu that the Nothing almost got them, but they managed to get away. They led Atreyu close to the Nothing so he could see it. It was the first time he saw it.
They rode on. At night-time when Atreyu slept he dreamed of a purple buffalo many times. The last time the buffalo told him that the only one who knew what was the cause of the darkness and the cure for the Childlike Empress" sickness is Morla the Aged One. The road to her led through the Swamps of Sadness.
Unfortunately his horse Artax had no hope of finding Morla and as they cross the Swamps he became more and more sad, and sank deeper and deeper into the Swamps. Atreyu couldn't help his friend, he couldn't feel the sadness steaming out of the Swamps for he wore AURYN. At last Artax went totally under. Atreyu was inconsolable. But he went on, and reached a hill. Suddenly the hill stirred and Atreyu fell off of it and landed on top of a dried-out tree. It turned out that the hill was a turtle, Morla the Aged One. Morla was so old that she didn't care of the happenings in Fantastica and Atreyu had to use all his cunningness to seduce an answer out of her. She told him that the Childlike Empress" life couldn't be counted in years only in names. Someone had to give her a new name; that was the cure of her sickness, and as her sickness caused the disappearing of Fantastica, the cure for that also.
