Unions

The knight's favorite tactical tool used against companies and corporations was the boycott. (Merkel 36) All was going well for the knights, but slowly they were deteriarateting from within. It started with their leader Powerdly, he was a compelling speaker, but lacked in the department to impose consistency on the knights (Merkel 37). Also Powerdly was not giving all his time to the organization. The organization was not helping with the money financially so Powerdly also had to go to work and provide for his family like every one else. (Merkel L) Soon the locals took matters into their own hand because Powerdly was to occupied with other matters. The knights could not also accommodate both he skilled and unskilled workers in the organization. The skilled felt threatened by the number of unskilled workers and another conflict was placed into the situation. (Merkel L) They soon faced another problem and that was the rising conflicts between the trades and the Knights. The conflict between Cowardly and Samuel Gompers who represented the trade was probably the most significant blow against the knights and was one of the main reasons for their abolishment. Both organizations had the same goals, but it seemed they just had different viewpoints in reaching them.
The final blow against the nights was the Haymarket Square incident that took place in 1886. On May 1, many workers struck for shorter hours. A group of radicals and anarchists became involved in this campaign. Powerdly opposed the participation of the nights, but many came showed up since Powerdly's authority was slowly diminishing. Two days later, a death occurred from a shooting during a riot in the McCormick Harvester plant in Chicago when police arrived. On May 4, a protest meeting was called by an antichrist group to discuss the events of the preceding day at Haymarket Square. It was to be a peaceful meeting and even the mayor gave them the authority to hold it.
