Criminal Profiling

.
The composition of a deductive criminal profile begins with the police report. The police report should be included in the information provided to the profiler by the law enforcement agency. The police report should include a complete reconstruction of the crime, which is essential to the criminal profiler. The victim's body can sometimes tell the profiler many things. The position of the body, location of the site where the body was found, wounds and the condition of the body are all essential data used by the profiler when constructing the profile. It is up to the law enforcement agency to provide a detailed police report with as much information as possible. If the smallest clue is overlooked, it could restrict the content and validity of the criminal profile.
A medical autopsy is another tool used by the criminal profiler. The medical examination should include all of the information needed to answer the many questions the profiler may have. The normal items included in the autopsy write up include height, weight, blood type, and eye color. As well as the basic information, the medical examination should provide all the items that relate to the particular case, such as bite marks etc. Often times, a serial killer will have a certain ritual that he/she followed during the murder, and the examination should indicate signs of that type of behavior, such as missing body parts, sex organs and mutilation. A profiler pays very close attention to whether or not there is sperm present in or on the victim, because DNA tests can be done on such evidence. .
One of the most vital aspects of the material evidence of the crime scene is the victim him or herself (Holmes, 90). Victimologists say that in many cases, people behave in ways that cause them to have a higher probability of becoming a victim (Holmes, 91). This information is extremely useful because it can help the profiler find out, in terms of a serial killer, what type of people are potentially at risk in future murders by the same suspect on the loose.
