Constituion

According to the system of the Electoral College the candidate receives all the members votes with the majority. In the last election Gore received 15 electoral votes from New Jersey. I voted for Bush but apparently that had no effect on the outcome. Obviously George Bush won, so this is not what I am concerned about. My point is that I feel as if my vote didn't count. If the election was based on the actual individual votes then Gore would be our president, and I wouldn't have minded because at least my voice would have been heard.
I think that if we counted each individual vote it would allow for everyone to have a voice in the election. I think that a better way of using the Electoral College to elect the president would be if each candidate received the ratio of electoral votes relative to the population from each individual state. For instance, if half of California voted for one candidate then that candidate would get 27 electoral votes because that is the ratio to how many votes California has total in the Congress. I don't understand why we have members of the House of Representatives elected relative to the population but the presidential election gives all the votes to one candidate or the other. If the votes from the election were based on the ratio system then at least my vote could have counted for something. I feel that everyone is entitled to vote for who they want too but the Federal system is set up in a way that minimizes the efforts of the individual voter. There are some things that I would change about our system of government and others that I wouldn't. I am a supporter of our system of checks and balances and if I knew of a specific way to make it run in a more efficient manner then I"m sure someone else who could make the change would know it too and do it. Our Federal system works to protect our Constitution which is our foundation in this great country and if we have to sacrifice expediency for thoroughness a safety then that is a price worth paying.
