Joe Millionaire

The problem about the whole Joe Millionaire idea is that it is very misleading, especially regarding the stereotypes of women and of men. For one thing, Evan Marriott (or Evan Wallace, the name he told to the girls) genuinely made the impression that he wanted to find a woman that loved him for who he is. This is obviously not true, as for one thing, he is likely faking the whole thing just so we get a good laugh. .
Even if he genuinely wanted to find a woman that loved him for who he is, nobody in their right mind would try and do this on a reality TV show. Perhaps he wanted to be on TV, which seems the most believable possibility I can think of, unless he is just acting and getting paid for the whole show. All I know is that he doesn't seem all that stupid, so I"m sure that he is not REALLY doing this to find a woman. .
One thing that I find interesting about the girls that were chosen for Joe Millionaire was that they were all attractive women. This defends the author when they state that, "desiring a rich man is no more shallow that desiring a pretty woman" This could have possibly been done for Evan's benefit, however the most likely reason why they chose these women was to further gain interest of the audience. .
But of course, the main issue that this article looked at was the stereotype of women portrayed in the show: "It plays to the basest stereotypes about money-grubbing women" "The obvious purpose of this show is to confirm all the worst stereotypes about the shallow, bitchy, gold-digging, Backbiting ways of women." Basically, the author gave the impression that they believed that the show was giving the message, as stated above, that women were out for money, and they"d do anything to get what they want.
Because this is a reality TV show, we can assume that these women had no script, and were not asked to act in a certain way. This means that whatever they were doing was up to them, meaning that the show itself had not specifically given women in general a stereotype.
