The systems theory that was created by Ludwig von Bertalanffy in the 1930s is the best theory to which I have been exposed in this class. This theory presents the general idea that a system is made up of many parts, all with different functions. All parts of the system are interrelated and they work together in synergy. The parts alone cannot accomplish what the entire system can. Bertalanffy also indicates that these parts must efficiently communicate. It was equally important to Bertalanffy that other theories be cultivated from his general systems theory. Because it is general in nature, the theory is not only useful in the study of mass communications and public relations, but it can also be applied to everyday life.
Based on my research, I have found numerous criteria for what makes a good theory. A good theory should not only have practical use, but also conjectural value. The general systems theory creates new perspectives on the way people and societies operate, thus the possibility for improvement is enhanced. The systems theory is interesting in that it can stand alone as a theory in itself, as well as serve as the foundation for more definitive theories. Additionally, the general systems theory has been used by other philosophers and scholars as the basis for studies that are unrelated to communication which is the purpose it serves in this class. The systems theory can pertain to any situation and a reasonable prediction can be reached.

From a theoretical standpoint, this theory satisfies all the criteria for a good theory. The general systems theory has the ability to make predictions that enable us to prepare for and prevent crisis. This theory is highly testable. A test could involve the moving parts of an airplane or the components of a public relations program. In each instance, an outcome will serve as an evaluation of efforts. As mentioned earlier, this theory has been used to develop other theories that are similar.
