Human Performance

If the test subject takes a longer time to go through the test but his response time was low, than his encoding was the difficulty. If that is the case than the researcher would have to look at the memory set size, and compare size to time of completion. These factors would indicate that the subjects encoding ability was the mental process that was not performing adequately. .
The test can also reveal other factors like comparison. For example, if the memory set is large than the probe digit would have to be compared to more numbers which would require more concentration, however, it is also a better indication of short-term memory because the larger set size is more to remember. This would indicate to the researcher that if the test subject performed better with a larger memory set then his short-term memory is more extensive. If the response time was low than this tells the researcher that, for example, the subject was affected through stress of being timed. Through the comparison process the test subject has to compare the probe digit to the memory set and then press the answer key. If the test subject is made aware ahead of time that he/she is being timed during this comparison then that could affect the outcome of the results. It could also indicate if in fact the subject used all their memory set. If the subject uses a "terminating" search then they would use each digit of the memory set individually until they found which digit they think is the probe and then terminate the search, or if they searched using the "exhaustive" technique in which the subject reviews the whole memory set before making a selection. .
If response time is long then the subject could be searching their memory set with the exhaustive technique. If the response time is quick then the response time being used could be terminating. Also these techniques could also affect accuracy, with longer search times of the memory set leading to more accurate responses.
