Ulysses S Grant

He was stationed near St. Louis Missouri ant Jefferson Barracks. It was there that he met and fell in love with Julia Dent who was the daughter of a local planter and the sister of one of his classmates at West Point. They became engaged. The threat of war with Mexico delayed their wedding. He was sent to Louisiana in l844 and then to Texas in l845. He was in an area claimed by both Texas and Mexico when the war began in l846. He fought in nearly all the battles of the Mexican War. He served under General Zachary Taylor the under General Winfield Scott. He became regimental quartermaster in charge of supplies. At Monterey he volunteered to carry a message through the streets lined with enemy snipers. In l847 Grant took part in the capture of Mexico City. He received promotions and praise for his skill and bravery during this War. This experience taught him many lessons that he used during the civil war.
After the war with Mexico ended in l848 Grant asked for a leave, then returned to St. Louis and to Julia Dent. On August 22, l848 they were married. By this time he had given up on the idea of teaching math. Julia returned with him to military life for the next 4 years at Sackets Harbor, New York and then Detroit, Michigan. They were happy during this time and had one child, a son. During this time Grant also had a problem with drinking to much which had started from loneliness during the War with Mexico. Julia was a good wife and gave Grant constant encouragement. Together they were very happy. .
In l852 he was transferred to Fort Vancouver in the Oregon Territory. Grant did not take his wife and young son because his army pay would not support a family in the West. Living expenses were higher in the West. She also did not want to take their young son on such a hard trip as that would be. Julia stayed with her parents (one source said she stayed with his parents).
On the trip to the Pacific Coast they went by way of the Panama Canal.
