On Sunday, October 5, I attended The Trip to Bountiful play; the play was put on by the Shoestring Players of USCS. The play promptly began at 3:15 p.m. in the theatre on the USCS campus. The Shoestring players did a breathtaking job of putting on the production; no mishaps occurred, and the audience left the play feeling content with the outcome of the play.
The Trip to Bountiful is a drama; the play is based around Mrs. Watts, who feels as if she is a burden to her son and his wife and wants to return to her old home in Bountiful, Texas. While Mrs. Watts is trying to get to Bountiful, her frustrating daughter-in-law, Jessie Mae, is always putting a halt to her plans.
I sat in the fourth row of the theatre, and had a great view of all the endeavors that occurred. The lighting was well organized, and that Jessie Mae smoked a real cigarette made the play seem even more real, due to the smell of it.
Professor Rich Robinson uniquely designed the set of The Trip To Bountiful. The play takes place in Houston, Texas at the Watts" apartment and the bus station; the Watts" apartment is designed to where the audience can see the bedroom and the living room of the apartment at the same time. The play also takes place at the Houston bus station where Mrs. Watts spends the night, and at her house in Bountiful.
The special effects of the play, such as Mrs. Watts running everywhere, and Jessie Mae Smoking a real cigarette, only added to the high quality of the play. Something else that added to the play was the acting; the actors were each well suited to their roles. Tracy Bouye who played the character of Jessie Mae showed incredible talent by annoying Mrs. Watts as well as the audience.
The play was well done and is something that I would recommend to another student. The Shoestring Players left me with a good first impression, and I will definitely attend another one of their plays.
