The United States of America is a country with no social or economical hierarchy. The first immigrants who came to this land were Europeans who hated the strict and rigid class systems of their homelands and had come in search of a new and freer life. It is this factor, that gives America its character. The policy of a "free country", to me, is what makes America unique. .
Composed of denim, an extremely durable and tough fabric, jeans are the ultimate American icon standing for freedom, equality, and the dominican republic. Developed in the mid-19th century by Levi Strauss, these workmen trousers were fit for any kind of weather, terrane, and climate. .
When we think about why such clothing was invented, we discover that it was ultimately because America had no King. It is quite rare to find Kings, and queens doing their own laundry. They usually have hired personnel to do such jobs for them. In addition, the clothes they ware are usually formal coats and dresses, not workers" pants. In America however, no one was the king, and thus no one could manage their daily lives in silk dresses and glass slippers, or simply afford them for that matter. The clothes a man wore had to last him at least a year or two.
Another reason that promoted the development of jeans was the agricultural aspect of America. Many immigrant families looked toward farming as a For fields to be made, ground had to be cleared and leveled out. Families would have to travel miles thorough treacherous land in order to find fertile ground to settle on. Jeans were the perfect type of clothes to be wearing for such an occasion.
