Pediatric Nurse

These little actions make a child's experience a lot more pleasant. A doctor does not have the time a nurse has to provide this comfort and deliver the one-on-one attention the child needs. Family members are sometimes too distraught to be calm and relaxed like a child may need. Without a pediatric nurse a child would feel very lonely in such an unfamiliar surrounding. .
Not just anyone can be a pediatric nurse. There are certain characteristics these individuals need to be a skillful and successful nurse. First of all, if one is going to be working with children everyday, they need to enjoy the company of a child. If an individual is very insecure around children, children will sense this. They need to be able to rely on someone who is confident. A nurse is going to experience children who are angry, scared, confused, and are more then likely going to cry. It is necessary to be able to console a child when they are emotional. This may require patience at times. Becoming impatient with a child when they are ill and hurting would scare the child and they would lose their ability to trust their nurses. That makes treating them an uneasy process because it turns into more of a battle. It is also important to have good communicative skills. Not having the ability to properly and efficiently convey information to a child in a way that they can understand could lead to more confusion. When communicating to a child and their family you need to be thorough, and compassionate. "The nurses must be comfortable negotiating visiting times with parents and encouraging them to get sufficient rest and meals so that they are capable of supporting their child when they visit" (Vestal, Johnson 607). Not only will one be dealing with their emotions, but their illness or injury. This means blood, vomit, urine, and other bodily fluids. A nurse cannot become weak due to the sight of this. .
When one is fully trained and educated as an RN (registered nurse), they are trained to treat adults.
