Otherwise, if the drugs were to continue to be banned and if it could be completely enforced, "we would then see a decline in the standards of professional sport" (Yesalis,101). The legalization would then allow for the continuation of the high performances we are accustomed to. For example, "steroids have built the greatest period of slugging that baseball has ever seen" (Verducci). Although steroids have contributed to world records and higher competitive goals, the standards already set are false due to the use of drugs. The decline in the standards of sports would simply be because of athletes now using their natural abilities. .
The success in sports should be obtained through hard work, practice, will and effort. Nothing else should be an obstacle between these words. The use of steroids, and unnatural substances, defeats the purpose of competition. If every athlete would use steroids, what would come next? Athletes should take their wants into their own hands, and not rely on foreign sources or aid. Using steroids is just like having five tires on a Formula One car. It sure helps, but it is not what Formula One racing is for. It should either be qualified as another sport, or be fully banned. Steroid use is not only linked to professionals. All junior and senior high school athletes should be tested regularly for anabolic steroid use. Unfortunately High School kids are touched by that problem. In High School, no one is even tested for steroids. They can get full scholarships to colleges through a mix of cheating and talent. .
This cannot be the right way to enter the challenging world of professionals. A drafted football player from a High School to a NFL (National Football League) team can already rely on the use of drugs to reach success. If that is the way he started at his younger age. It is basically a whirlpool, if you see results the first time you do it, why not do it again? An athlete needs to understand the spirit and the authenticity of sports.
