Today I am going to inform you about the muscular disease Cerebral Palsy, also commonly referred to as CP. The disease affects the muscular make up of your body, it weakens you to an abnormal extent, but Cerebral Palsy mostly affects the brain and the way it sends signals to the muscles that are developed. I am going to inform you of the diagnosis, treatment, types and effects of CP on a child that I have compiled through extensive research and personal experience.
My first point is to explain the diagnosis and treatment of the muscle disorder known as CP. My cousin Zachary had shown these symptoms as early as three months. As devastating as it was, the "sooner you see the symptoms the better, because the disorder will be treated earlier" (Scherzer 228). There are many different types of CP; the diagnosis also varies with the types. Some of the "common symptoms include lethargy, irritability, high-pitched cry, trembling of the arms and legs, low muscle tone, poor feeding abilities, seizures, staring spells, and eye fluttering" (About-Cerebral-Palsy 3). Zach has a few of these symptoms and they are quite scary, one time when I was holding him while his mother was out of the room. Zach started to tremble like it was freezing cold while he was just staring and blinking into space. Once a child with CP reaches the age of six months you start to see that he or she is picking up normal motor skills slower than a child without the disorder. .
My second point is to explain the cause and types of Cerebral Palsy. The cause is not completely understood, but medical examiners have started to realize that the effects are during a woman's pregnancy. Zach's disorder was caused by a pre-mature birth that was not cared for properly, he was not in rushed into neo-natal care like all pre-matures babies should be. Not to mention him being breeched, with a slow heart beat already. The doctors also say the cause of CP can be drug use by the mother, lack of oxygen to the brain after birth; which was also part of Zach's disorder, and even poor hygiene before birth.
