Torture In America

It is an epidemic that has been happening in America and other parts of the world for decades. Yet,we often find ourselves tip-toeing around this sensitive subject trying to find a meaningful solution but never setting a solid foundation. This article explores a book that dares to approach the very essence of heartbreak in America at this time -terrorism. The people that dare to taunt the great institution of the United States with evil, and the punishments that they should have to face. This article takes it a bit further than jail times served, or even execution, to an entirely new level of punishment - torture. .
Alen Dershowitz, the author of the book, has been thinking about torture for more than a decade, even more intently so after the September 11 attacks on the United States. He believes practicing torture in America would not only provide a proper punishment for terrorists but would also serve as a safeguard in preventing further attacks. The torture of a convict could provide also comes information, information in Dershowitz eyes that would provide safety. The article goes on to explain that Dershowitz is not in favor of torture, in his own words, but he does believe it is enviable. In that state of mind, he proposes the question, "Why not make it legitimate in some way?" Dershowtiz stated he became interested in the subject in the 1980's when he visited Israel and learned of what their security forces employed. "Moderate physical pleasure" was the term given to the actions used to extract leads from suspected terrorist on future attacks. The only downfall in their system was that the extracted information under such conditions could not be used in court in the prosecution because the information was not considered voluntary. Dershowitz concedes that the first thought of torture appalled him, and then he began to approach the ticking bomb terrorist theory. This theory is a hypathical situation in which one person might know information about a terrorist attack and how it may be prevented, in result saving hundreds or even thousands of lives.
