While the above truths and steps are ideals set forth by the Jina (one who is freed from passions), they do carry extreme psychotherapeutic benefits to those who manifest them. Destruction of the ego and of attachment to suffering liberates people to enjoy the present moment. It helps people to stop living in the past or create illusions about the future. If the metaphysical benefits of reaching or striving to reach bodhi are unreal, the physical and mental benefits of longevity, good character, and mindfulness are not.
For instance, a Buddhist who adheres to their beliefs would be free from intoxicants, materialism, lying, and anxiety. They would have a system of beliefs; regardless of how flawed, as to how the universe functions. Karmic beliefs which carry the precept that a good deed or bad deed is returned promotes an individual to be aware of a cosmic Santa. Being freed from intoxicants and having lucidity of mind are immediately redeeming to a person's well being and sense of self-esteem. Anxiety is dissolved when compassion is expressed towards others because it eliminates the focus on (I).
