Everyday Life In Early America (by stoof)

"" David Freeman Hawke states, "This much, though, can be said with certainty: they differed within a few years of settlement from their English counterparts, not only in what they ate, and what they raised, but in the way they lived."" This shows that not only were they independent from England, but in some instances they had to be Independent from England. Men were forced to make what they needed "independently- what they once were dependent on other people to do for them. Because of this, some people had to acquire some traits to survive in this new "independent- way of life. All of these examples show how Hobbenism absolutism was discouraged in the colonies by Independence. .
Another adjective describing early American settlers is intrepid. The people who came over to the "new land- were very brave. First off, they took a big risk just by taking the long voyage across the ocean in small, often crowed ships, filled with people and deadly diseases. When they arrived, they faced starving, the harsh weather, and other unknown dangers that might have been lurking in the vast woods of early America. The people were willing to take these risks because they knew they that America offered them new opportunities, freedom, and Independence. In a section of the book, it is said that the white man's intentions were "good but wrongheaded- The London Company said that they must all treat the Indians humanely. But they also said that they also have to convert them to Christian and that they must be trained to be like them. This might have looked as "good intensions- to them, but they really can be bad if looked upon form the Indians point of view. So the Indians quickly turned into an enemy or more of a fear to settlers, especially when you have people like Martin Frobisher. He said that the Indians were barbaric, uncivilized etc. He says things such as how nasty they are when they clean off their knives with their tongues.
