Theoretical Evolution Of Female Crime


Female's tend to compete with one another for resources and may lead to women committing theft or fraud. Some of the reasons females may not commit the more serious offenses may be because women are less competitive than males. Women are not interested in achieving leadership therefore are less likely to commit crimes for status or power. The evolutionary facts why women commit crimes like fraud and theft is to protect themselves. .
             In the past, women offenders were portrayed as hysterical, irrational and incapable of being fully responsible for her actions and crimes due to her biology and sex. The earlier theories on female crime made women the target of outrageous studies concerned only with their sexuality. Unlike male studies in which male criminals are seen as a threatening force with which to be reckoned. The main reason for the disturbing view of women held by many early theorists is because of the popular stereotypes of women in society. Some theories still exist today that study women sexuality as the main characteristic for their crime. In fact, there are two main categories in which today's criminal theories on women fall into. The first is the Trait Theories, which study the internal dispositions of women such as the biological and psychological explanations for female crime. The second which is the Socialization Theory, which study the learned behaviors with sociological explanations. .
             Contemporary theory is one of the trait explanations of female criminal activity. The main research studies the hormonal differences between criminal women and non-criminal women. It is believed that females with high testosterone levels are more likely to engage in stereotypical male behavior. Therefore, are more criminal. The contemporary theory also studies the woman's menstrual cycle and suggests that PMS is linked to aggressive behavior. Some evidence has shown that a significant number of incarcerated females committed crimes during premenstrual phase and are somewhat vulnerable to hormonal changes.
