The uncertainties of the future is what drives teens crazy and makes them feel as if suicide is the only way to end their pain and frusterations.
In an article titled "A 'tragedy of apathy' in teen's suicide," M. Cristina Medina stated that "Teenagers commit suicide because there is too much pain in their lives and they can do one of two things; move from the pain or learn to cope with it." Some teenagers learn to cope with the overwhelming flow of emotions and pain; however, others do not. Suicide is the reason 15,000 people around the world die every year. This statistic grows by the minute (Medina).
What could ever posses someone to kill themselves? If a person, not just a teenager, has enough strength and courage to take their own life, they would have had enough strength and courage to survive whatever pushed them over the edge. .
So what pushed Brandi over the edge? Depressed over her recent breakup and overwhelmed with her schoolwork, Brandi thought it better to take her own life than to tough it out like all of her friends. .
"Depression is the leading cause of suicide among teenagers in the United States," quotes the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) web site. So why are so many teens depressed? The AAP believes that school is a major factor of depression among teens. School and athletic competition has dramatically grown in the past 50 years or so. Teens begin thinking that they are failures just because they are not the valedictorian or star quarterback on their football team. Society places unrealistic goals on teens to be the best at everything. The problem is that only one person can be the best, all the others are second best. This in turn makes teens feel like failures and give up hope. Also, society has lost all of its faith in its youth and doesn't prepare them as well as they used to for the real world. Many teens view the world as a place without reason, a place without purpose and a place without hope for the future.
