The Republic of Mauritius's Position Paper on Trade and Development.
The republic of Mauritius is most often referred to as African Miracle when it comes to sustainable development. Its society has vastly improved living standards, while extending socio-economic factors to the entire country, such as health care, education and housing.
The Republic of Mauritius is in favor of assisting in sustainable development in the rest of Sub-Saharan Africa, especially by encouraging international trade to these countries as that played a role in Mauritius's development.
The Republic of Mauritius defines sustainable development by the United Kingdom definition as "social progress that recognizes the needs of everyone, with high levels of economic growth and employment prudent, use of natural resources, and effective protection of the environment." (Schmandt and Ward 2000) .
Mauritius finds sustainable development an important concept in the future of the world and most importantly of it's continent, Africa. While having reached a developed state itself, Mauritius finds importance to be at a high level to supporting Sub-Saharan Africa.
The Republic of Mauritius finds the single greatest challenge to sustainable development in SSA is poverty, as Mauritius has more programs to relieve this within it is own country. As SSA, a majority of the time has failed time and time again to improve the quality of life namely of groups such as the elderly, people with disabilities, the needy, widows and orphans, substance abusers, inmates of charitable institutions, homeless and beneficiaries from the National Solidarity Funds.
Mauritius's policy towards Lesser Developed Countries (LDC) is that of supporting the international climate for environmental and developmental goals as possible. Mauritius has committed to UN goals for ODA and debt relief. It is the sponsor of the "Mauritius Mandate".
Mauritius encourages involvement of Foreign Investors in other SSA countries.
