The Power Of Luck

This place remains unexplained and only this horse can take him there mentally. After riding for a few minutes, he exclaimed, " "Well, I got there!" with his blue eyes still flaring" (203). He would be "plunging to and fro" and be "madly surging on the rocking-horse" (212) at all hours of the night. His connection with this inanimate object brings him much satisfaction as well as guarantee. Paul feels as if he could hop onto his horse and furiously ride him and know what he looks for and dreams of. .
Paul has proven that he has luck, in contrast with his parents. With being only an adolescent boy, he is already interested in success and achieves many accomplishments in a witty way. Being very interested in the sport and gambling features of horse racing, he begins to ride his rocking-horse in hopes of knowing the name of the winning horses before the races. When he and his uncle discuss on which horse they should place their bets, his uncle suggested "putting 20 on Mizra" (205), however Paul knew that Daffodil would win. Even though he "had never been to a race meeting before" (205), his rocking horse told him the outcome in advance on his daily dose of riding him. As Paul's blue eyes were firing with excitement and suspense, "Daffodil came in first Mizra third" (206). This was the first experience that Paul has with luck itself. Days later, at another race, Paul places his bet upon Spark. "Paul had made ten thousand" pounds off of that bet and was "absolutely sure of him [winning]" (207). Luck has certainly come into this little boys life, why did he want his success so soon in life instead of enjoying his childhood without a goal of finding luck within? Was Paul feeding himself luck for a specific reason?.
Everything Paul had done in his near past was for the specific reason of stopping the haunting whispering in his house. "A voice would start whispering: "There must be more money! There must be more money!" " (201).
