Articles of Confederation

The colonists were living in an almost brand new country, an infant compared to other European countries. Considering that the articles of confederation had no precedent to follow, and no other example; the articles were fairly well put together. On the other hand, the Articles of Confederation could have been much more effective than they were. The government was able to provide the people with the kind of government they initially wanted and needed. Also, the Articles were deliberately written for a weak central government, and the colonists set it up they way they wanted to. Despite the fact that the colonists won the revolutionary war, and they now realized that they were able to unite as one, they feared that a strong central government would cause each individual state to loose the civil rights which they had previously gained. Therefore, the colonists made a weak central government, on purpose. However, the kind of government that was created caused much uncertainty. The industrious people preferred security and quiet and fluctuations in the government disgusted them. If there is too much uncertainty, then they would agree to anything that would give them the security that they desired. (Document G).
The Articles of Confederation set up a unicameral Congress in which each state had exactly one vote. A committee of thirteen people, one for each original colony, created the executive authority. The Articles gave very limited rights to the federal government. It was very difficult to get anything done because a unanimous decision was required to add amendments, change a law, etc. The powers that were given to the federal government by the Articles of Confederation include the authority to make war and treaties, as well as the ability to determine the amount of troops and money each state can contribute. However, the Articles left the government without a way to enforce anything.
