Marquis De Lafayette


            Marie Jean Paul Joseph Roche Yves Gilbert du Motier, Marquis de Lafayette, or better known as just Marquis de Lafayette, was born in Auvergene on September 6, 1757. His parents both died when he was only twelve. At the age of 14, Lafayette joined the Royal Army and at the age of 16 he married into one of the wealthiest families in France. At a dinner in 1775, Lafayette learned of the struggle in the colonies. When learning of this, he came to the colonies to aid them in the war as a volunteer. On June 13, 1777, Lafayette and several French officers arrived in South Carolina. Because of his nobility and his patriotic motives, he was commissioned a major general on July 31, 1777. He met Washington later that summer and a friendship developed between the two men which would last over a lifetime. In December 1777, he went with Washington to Valley Forge. Lafayette remained at Valley Forger to improve his knowledge of military tactics until Washington marched on to meet the enemy in New Jersey. Lafayette requested the command of the advanced position from Lee but later resigned back to Lee. He was wounded in the Battle of Brandywine. He was made a division commander and fought at Monmouth. In 1178, he returned to France to financially and militarily aid the Americans. In 1780, he returned to America and served in the Virginian campaign that ended with the surrender of the British at Yorktown which ended the war. He returned to France in 1781 and then he took an active part in the French Revolution. He returned to the U.S. many times after that. Lafayette's loyalty to Washington and his contribution in the fight for American independence will not be forgotten. He died on May 20, 1834, in Paris, France.
