"Rosa Vargas" kids are too many and too much." (p.29) When kids are added to families it sometimes turns into a trap. In Rosa's case she has too many kids to handle, and her dream of having the big house and great dinners are now gone. In other case it's not the number of kids, but the parents rules and strictness. In Sally's house her parents are very strict, especially her father. "Her father says to be this beautiful is trouble. They are very strict in his religion. They are not supposed to dance."(p.82) With her father being this strict Sally has to be two different people, instead of just herself. Esperanza notices this and thinks, "You become a different Sally. You pull your skirt strait; you rub the blue paint off your eyelids. You don't laugh, Sally."(p.82) So she is not only trapped by her father but also by her own mind, in the way she has to pretend who she is. Sally wants to think by getting married she would be released from her "traps". But what she doesn't realize is that marriage is just as big of a "trap".
Growing up on Mango Street, Esperanza sees men and marriage trap many women, including her good friend Sally. Sally got married at a very young age, thinking it would fix everything, but she comes to realize the she had more freedom within the trap at home. ".he wont let her talk on the telephone. And he doesn't let her look out the window. And he doesn't like her friends, so nobody gets to visit her unless he is working.". "She sit at home because she is afraid to go outside with out his permission."(p.102) Sally realized fast that marriage was not as great as she thought it would be, as did Rafaela and Minerva. Rafael is literly "trapped" in her marriage. She often, ".gets locked indoors because her husband is afraid Rafaela will run away since she is too beautiful to look at." (p. 79) Even though Rafaela is locked up, it may not be anywhere as bad as Minerva's marriage because she is physically abused.
