Television Violence, Not a Major Problem.
Television violence may by an issue, maybe even a small factor in some crimes, but it is not the major cause for the violence in our streets. Some television shows have a lot of violence, but it is the parents job to explain to their kids that television is make believe and should not be acted out. Violence on television should not be an acceptable excuse for crimes that people commit. People blame television because they have no one else to point the finger at. Parents should play a major role in their children's life, because the society we live in today has almost come to accept violence as normal.
Some television shows are not suitable for all audiences, but it is the parents" job to set guidelines about what they can and can not watch. Shows like "Southpark" are not suitable for young children, but kids believe that since it is a cartoon it is O.K. for them to watch. Until children are old enough to understand the difference between real and make-believe, they should be limited to certain shows they can watch. Late night shows are the ones that tend to have the most violence; therefore parents should not allow their children to be up that late and unsupervised. If parents feel that some channels on television are too violent, then they should edit those channels off so that their children can not view them. Now, most television stations have a rating system that indicated the content and age recommendation of the program that is showing. .
Research shows that some television violence has caused aggressive behavior; and without parental guidance kids could possibly be influenced. Everyone has different personalities, so it is impossible to prove exactly who will be affected by television violence and who will not. Children must be taught what is right and wrong so that they will not try to act out the violence that they see on television.
