What is it that defines a true leader? Is there only one type of leadership role, or are there thousands occurring in every situation? The precise definition of leadership, according to the Merriam-Webster Dictionary, states that a leader is someone to direct the operations, activity, or performance of." In the essay, "Arm in Arm for Justice," Father Dan Hartnett S.J. argues, "The integration of faith, knowledge and service makes for true leadership." Hartnett goes on throughout his essay to describe the ideal model for leadership in the direction of justice. This supreme reproduction would incorporate the act of experience with "the face of injustice" (Hartnett 28). The model would then formulate an understanding and empathy toward the injustice such as poverty. After that he or she would begin to imagine the possibility of positive change in the injustice, and follow with a form of action striving toward that imagination. I believe that, aside from a leader en route for fighting injustice, such as Father Hartnett described, there exist many other influential types of leadership such as economic, sports professional, and educational.
In the economic world, companies thrive on the decisions made by the CEO's and the general management. Their decisions affect a great number of people anywhere. Whether it is the stockholders or employees or even the customer clientele, these decisions reach everyone in each others differing situations. It would be hard to imagine a company without a set designated group of knowledgeable individuals hired solely for the decision making process. I would imagine the company having to resort to mass voting for each and every predicament. They could send ballets to every individual involved in the corporation creating mass hysteria all over the dilemma concerning the date of the next red tag sale. We can all imagine how this would not facilitate the overall succession of the company.
