The Endangered Gorilla


            
             Gorillas belong to the family hominidae. It is common in this family for males to be larger than females. All of them have flattened nails no tales, and a large braincase. They are omnivorous, and very complex in their social behavior. There are three subspecies of gorilla. G. g. graueri also called the eastern lowland gorillas live in the area of Zaire eastward. G. g. beringei are also called the mountain gorillas live in the mountains of central Africa. G. g. gorilla are also called the western lowland gorilla live in south east Nigeria, Gabon, and Cameroon.
             Reproductive Biology.
             Gorillas breed during any season, and give birth on average to a gorilla every three to four years after a nine month gestation period. In the case of twins the mother often allows one of them to die. On average a mother only produces a survivable gorilla every 6-8 years. The gorillas have an average lifespan of around 40 years. .
             Ecological Relationships.
             Gorillas primarily live in open canopy tropical rain forest from sea level to mountains. They eat various forms of vegetation. They sleep in nest, and conform to a social hierarchy. Currently there are about 60 areas of land ranging from 10 to 200 square miles a piece in which gorilla groups reside. They only use about 21 percent of their territory. The average size of one of these groups is about seventeen gorillas. With one gorilla leads the bunch which is the silverback male. .
             Global Rank and Federal Status.
             The International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources (ICUN) has the gorilla listed as critically endangered. The U.S. endangered species act classifies them as endangered. .
             Threats.
             Gorillas have earned a reputation as plantation destroyers and crop pest. For this reason they are hunted. Dole also they are hunted for their heads, hands, and for food. Numerous gorillas have been killed just to isolate the young so that they may be sold into captivity in zoos.
